Pretty Much Came to a Realization...
There is no real upside to not just picking game writing gigs solely on my enjoyment of the material. For the money, time, and most importantly dealing with worst of the fans there's virtually no reason to not write this stuff almost purely for me. Any ideas of "this will be a challenge" or "this might lead to some other interesting projects" are so erratic in their ability to pan out they seem not so much considerations as random possibilities. And after looking back at reactions to various works (mine and others) it's nearly pointless for the few bucks to do anything but just say "Hey, that sounds like fun. I'd like my name on that." Because you might do good solid work on a deadline and might get a full blown internet smear campaign. Or you might throw something together for kicks and people love it and think you're so awesome they name terminology and shit after you.
Note this isn't just games. Comics, movies, etc... all have this thing too. But they pay better and have a much higher rate of being able to capitalize on success.
Which makes his current gig even more cool. As I love the material dearly and will only be sad if it doesn't turn into more work because I want to write more of this. No other reasons of consequence.
As well it should be.
